Nigeria beat Angola in AfroBasket 2015 Final to win first-ever continental title

RADES (AfroBasket 2015) - Nigeria beat Angola 74-65 in the Final of AfroBasket 2015 in Rades, Tunisia on Sunday to claim their first-ever continental championship.



In being crowned African champions, the Nigerians also qualified for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Meanwhile, second-place Angola joined third- and fourth-place Tunisia and Senegal in booking their places for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs).



Angola went into the Final looking to win a 12th African title and led early on, before Nigeria's rotation made the difference as they turned the score around in the second quarter and once they took the lead, they held on to it, going up by as many as 19 points.

Chamberlain Oguchi hit a trifecta of three-pointers on his way to a game-high 19 points for Nigeria, with Olaseni Lawal finished with a dozen. Carlos Morais led the Angolans with 15 points while Yanick Moreira added 13. Click here for the full game report.

Oguchi was rewarded for his impressive tournament and huge individual performance in the Final by receiving the Most Valuable Player award, presented by Tissot.

The 29-year-old headlined the All-Star Five which also included his Nigeria team-mate Al-Farouq Aminu, Morais of Angola, Tunisia's Makram Ben Romdhane and Gorgui Dieng of Senegal.

"It's the best moment of my life, to be able to come here after missing the last AfroBasket, to be able to come here and do this with my brothers, it feels amazing," Oguchi said afterwards.

"I'm happy to be able to share this moment with them and for me personally, it’s just really great."
Tunisia bounced back from their Semi-Final defeat to Angola on Saturday to beat Senegal 82-73 in Sunday's Third-Place Game. Michael Roll made 4 of his 8 three-point attempts to lead all scorers with 25 points as the tournament hosts - despite playing without their star Salah Mejri - led for most of the contest and gave their fans something to cheer about. Two Referees Suspended for Rest of NPFL Season

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) referees, John Charles and Ogunta Matador, have been suspended for the rest of the season by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The decision to suspend the referees was reached Monday by the NFF Referees Committee  after reviewing the performance of the duo in the Sunshine Stars versus Dolphins FC in Akure last Sunday.

Chairman of the NFF committee, Yusuf Ahmed Fresh, explained that the two officials have been suspended for "gross misconduct and performance below the required standard."

The League Management Company (LMC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, also re-echoed the same line as Ahmed stating that the performance of the referees is considered unacceptable.

"John Charles and Ogunta Matador that officiated Dolphins FC and Sunshine Stars FC are suspended for the rest of the season from NPFL matches. This is as a result of their poor and below standard performance in the match that the LMC and the NFF Referees Committee consider not acceptable," Dikko said.

Charles and Matador were the centre referee and second assistant referee of the NPFL match between Sunshine Stars and Dolphins which the former won 2-1 through a controversial second goal by Prince Aggrey.

Meanwhile, Chairman of  NFF Players' Status Committee, Alhaji Kalli Babagana, has warned clubs on the domestic scene that are owing their players to be ready for hefty sanctions.

Babagana came out of a meeting of his committee at the weekend lamenting the attitude of many Nigerian clubs to the welfare of their players.

"It is sad to see that many clubs do not care about the well-being of their players. They do not mind owing players for several months and even years. How do they expect those players to feed themselves and their families, and even plan for the future?

"A labourer deserves his wages. We were faced with scores of cases of clubs owing players so much money. Very soon, we will descend on these clubs. The non-functioning of the Players' Status Committee over the years has not helped matters, and we thank the new NFF board for making this committee functional again."

Suleiman Hashimu, Lagos to Abuja trekker meets Buhari in Abuja

More excitement filled the air around the presidential campaign headquarters of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Abuja late Friday evening as Mr. Suleiman Hashimu, the Lagos to Abuja trekker finally met with the president-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari.

Hashimu had made a personal promise in 2013 that should Buhari contest and win the 2015 presidential elections, he would trek from Lagos to Abuja.

Having won the March 28 elections, Hashimu was forced to fulfill his promise and on Monday, April 20, 2015, he arrived Abuja from Lagos amid a cacophony of excitements and surprises.
Giving details of his journey to the President- Elect, the trekker said he passed through Kwara to Niger and then to Abuja.

Though his story may sound incredible, Hashimu said he didn't care about what people would say of him, stressing that what mattered to him was the fulfillment of his promise to God and himself.
He said: "I made a promise because of the love I have for Mr. President that if Buhari should win the 2015 elections, I will trek from Lagos to Abuja which I have done. I thank God that I made a promise and I fulfilled the promise.

"I passed through Kwara and Niger states to Abuja. I was trekking from 6.00am to 6.00pm and anywhere I find myself when it is 6.00pm, I pass the night there.I spent 18 days from Lagos to Abuja.

"Once I found myself inside the bush by 6.00pm and I managed to continue the trek till 9.00pm to a nearby village.
"I made this promise two years ago. I am based in Ibadan and I started my journey from Lagos because Lagos is the most popular city in Nigeria and I started from Berger junction in Lagos.

"I am not bothered about what people think. It is a promise between me and my God. I don't want anybody to believe me. I left Lagos because I made a promise. Right from Kwara state, I never walked alone for five kilometres. People always walk with me to the next village. I work with a construction company based in Ibadan."

Speaking at the event, Buhari congratulated Hashimu and thanked God that his health did not fail him.
"I want to congratulate you for making it. He is a young man and he was lucky that his health did not fail him. I also heard so many stories that you wore almost half a dozen pair of shoes. I also understand that there are people who have been quite generous to help you to pay for pair of shoes", Buhari said.
